A quick note about one of the fall’s finest jazz releases: Gregory Porter’s new R&B-tinted “Liquid Spirit” CD on Blue Note.
Porter’s such an amazingly soulful jazz stylist, as we already knew. For his third CD, he offers terrific, emotionally direct singing, fresh arrangements, and, overall, an enormously attractive neo-retro vibe in the grooves, and in the rhythm & horn parts provided by his regular working band. Deeply thoughtful lyrics. Nifty reworking of “The In Crowd” & an intimate, gorgeous, brilliantly phrased “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” with the singer joined only by pianist Chip Crawford and bassist Aaron James.
Consider me wowed. Too early to call it the jazz vocal CD of the year?
