Arturo Sandoval & Latin Grammy Jazz Winners; Notable Latin Jazz of 2012

Planet Jazz: Notes From All Over

Congrats to Arturo Sandoval, the Miami-based trumpeter, pianist, percussionist, composer and bandleader whose “Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You” (Concord Jazz) was named Best Latin Jazz Album in the 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards. The disc, a tribute to Sandoval’s mentor and former boss, the late Dizzy Gillespie, also won for Best Engineered Album.

Latin Grammy ceremonies were held last Thursday in Las Vegas.

Also nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album: “Jerry Gonzalez y El Comando de La Clave” (Sunnyside); Tania Maria, “Tempo” (Naive); Poncho Sanchez and Terence Blanchard, “Poncho Sanchez and Terence Blanchard = Chany Y Dizzy!” (Concord Picante); and Chuchito Valdes, “Live in Chicago” (Music Roots).

Chick Corea‘s “Further Explorations” (Concord Jazz), with Eddie Gomez and Paul Motian, won for Best Instrumental Album, beating out Paquito D’Rivera and Berta Rojas,  “Día Y Medio” (On Music); Guinga + Quinteto Villa-Lobos,  “Rasgando Seda” (SESC SP); Hamilton De Holanda Quinteto, “Brasilianos 3″ (Adventure Music); and Miguel Zenon‘s “Alma Adentro: The Puerto Rican Songbook”(Marsalis Music).
